Visualizing an image and constructing it on a page can daunt any artist.  Everyone must explore their mind-to-hand connection before they can pull a concept from their mind onto paper. Familiarizing your hand with the physicality of drawing can shape how you begin to perceive ideas in a way your hand can actually execute. In this traditional illustration course, students work with paper, pencil, and pen to develop confident, deliberate mark-making and composition skills needed to construct a convincing illustration. Students will engage with line art, sketching, and layering exercises to strengthen the mind-to-hand connection that allows a visual idea to become a finished piece. The course emphasizes stylization and confidence rather than figure drawing or color theory. Students will complete a series of illustrations demonstrating control and intentionality in their mark making.

Students should have an 11″ x 17″ sketchbook or larger, a Micron or fineliner ink pen, a standard pencil, artist tape, vellum paper (for drawing/tracing), scissors, ink (any ink will do), and any standard set of ink brushes. Students are expected to document their work by submitting photos.

This remote online class meets using the ZOOM platform.
