Science Muralism: Bridging Public Art + Science Outreach course examines how to utilize Public Art as a powerful tool for science learning, science engagement and community empowerment. The course explores the intersections of science, art, nature, and community as catalysts for dialogue and change around pressing ecological and social issues. Participants of this course will contribute to a massive public art movement for communicating and disseminating science-the Science Murals Initiative-which is led by the ART±BIO Collaborative and prioritizes accessibility, public engagement and culture. Through guided readings, discussions, participatory artmaking, and community science engagement, we will study Science Muralism, culminating in the co-creation and installation of Science Murals that will be installed locally and nationally. We will also develop complementary mural enrichments and lead all-ages, hands-on ArtScience activities at public mural celebrations. The course focuses on scientific literacy and inclusive science learning to empower learners, connecting ecological and social issues to cultural identity and lived experiences.
This class meet in person on campus at MassArt.
