This course focuses on the rich history and ongoing evolution of interior design as a profession. Through research and lectures, students explore various facets of the field by selecting from a curated list of topics. They will present their findings in engaging slide talks, covering influential figures like Florence Knoll, Alvar Aalto, Eileen Gray, and notable designers from related fields. In addition to the research component, students will create a schematic design for a small object. This could range from a chair to a light fixture, textile, or wallpaper, drawing inspiration from the design principles highlighted in their chosen topic. This dual approach fosters a comprehensive understanding of historical context while nurturing practical design skills applicable to contemporary challenges in the field.
