Metalshop is a comprehensive introduction to steel fabrication techniques. It includes various welding processes, such as oxy-fuel, “stick”, MIG, and TIG. Various mechanical processes for cutting, bending and perforating steel are covered, as well as traditional blacksmithing and modern forge fabrication techniques for exercising total control over shaping the material. CNC plasma cutting, CNC milling and CNC turning operations are an option for students interested in close tolerance mechanical connections or moving parts. Students are expected to explore sculptural expression and/or the elegant resolution of design issues with the execution of the required final project. Safety and professional shop practice are emphasized.
