Digital Artist Books: Print on Demand

In this intensive class, students craft professional print-on-demand books using Adobe Lightroom Classic’s book module and its seamless integration with Blurb’s digital print-on-demand service. Classwork is also adaptable for other printing platforms. Starting with a personal collection of digital images, students learn to edit their collection, create compelling image sequences, and master book design, layout techniques, and best practices, while exploring text-image relationships. Potential student projects range from photo books and exhibition catalogs to artist portfolios, illustrated poetry books, newsprints, or posters—diverse formats suited to this medium. The course covers digital post-production, sequencing, and design principles. Students engage with technical demonstrations, study contemporary artist and photography books, and critique works-in-progress. Between group sessions, one-on-one meetings with the instructor provide personalized skill-building and feedback. While familiarity with digital imaging and Adobe Lightroom Classic is helpful, beginners can access pre-class tutorial videos and handouts to build foundational skills for the course.
