Anatomy for Artists

This remote anatomy intensive class is designed to teach the skeletal-muscular foundations of the human body to artists of any level and any art discipline. Using the “Inside-out” principle of figurative art, students investigate how internal structures inform the surface topography on the body. This dialog between inside and out is understood and appreciated as students learn the layering of the body, beginning with the skeletal foundation and progressing to the surface expression of the completed figure. Through structured lectures, demonstrations and class exercises, students gain an understanding of the mechanics of gesture and the aesthetics of proportions while building their knowledge of the anatomical structures of the body. In-class drawing sessions give students the opportunity to develop drawing skills and deepen their knowledge by studying and interpreting Old Master anatomical drawings and medical illustrations of Leonardo da Vinci, Vitruvius, Michelangelo, Albinus, Dr. Paul Richer, and other distinguished anatomist/artists from Art History. The course also aims at developing critical thinking skills towards one’s own and others’ figurative artwork. Regular Zoom teleconferencing group meetings, including instruction, individual critiques in a psychologically supportive environment, digital slide lectures. and Power-Point demonstrations will be held.
