Stephen Maing

Stephen Maing is an award winning filmmaker and video journalist based in Brookyn, NY. His recent feature Truth + Consequences, about police whistleblowers, premiered at Sundance and screened nationally on POV.  Stephen is a fellow of the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program and a grant recipient of the MacArthur Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, Center for Asian American Media and the Independent Television Service. Stephen has co-directed an on-going series of films about police community relations and the criminal justice system, THE HUNTED & THE HATED and THE TARGET. He recently directed the one-hour CNN documentary,BLACK & BLUE which expands upon some of these subjects and policing issues in New York City. Stephen has directed several New York Times documentaries. His feature documentary, HIGH TECH, LOW LIFE was filmed over five years in China, Taiwan, Romania & Germany as he documented two of China’s first dissident citizen-journalists as they reported on censored news throughout mainland China. More recently, he directed and produced THE SURRENDER, which intimately documents brilliant intelligence analyst Stephen Kim’s ordeal as he is harshly prosecuted under the Espionage Act and his final days before going to prison.
