Stop-Motion From The Home Studio

In this 7-week class, students make inanimate objects and physical materials come to life using traditional stop-motion techniques in experimental and at-home DIY environments. We explore the basics of animated movement and students learn the animation process from start to finish. Exercises demonstrate concepts including boils, loops and morphs, and students learn sequence-planning methods and create structures for straight-ahead improvisations. Important aspects of pre-production and post production including lighting and sound are also discussed. Students may participate using image capturing apps available on smartphones and tablets, in combination with Adobe After Effects and Premiere, made available to all students via MassArt’s institutional account. Screenings present a large variety of animated experimental stop-motion shorts, from narrative-driven stories to abstract gestural films. Creative exploration of non-traditional and traditional animation materials is encouraged. No experience necessary. Class involves demos, workshops, and critique.
