Paper Basket Weaving: Experimenting with Texture, Color, and Form

In this class, students learn to weave baskets from various types of paper! Traditional basket making techniques such as a plaited and diagonal basket weaving will be used to build forms while exploring the possibilities of using thin and thick paper strips for surface design and structure. Some techniques demonstrated in class include how to make tall baskets and how to round the basket shape. We will push the boundaries of lashing and create new edge designs with colorful leather cord. Watercolor and printmaking paper, mulberry paper, and thick construction paper are examples of possible papers for basket making. Please bring existing prints and paintings larger than 11×14 inches as well as watercolor supplies if you want to paint your paper.
