Introduction to Painting (7 weeks)

Begin painting in this exploration of new and traditional directions and techniques. The basis of the course is studio work, primarily working in oil (preferred) or acrylics, and includes the use of models, as well as lectures and demonstrations. Color and composition theory, and the study of form, space, and light are addressed. Previous experience with drawing is helpful.

Materials List
Required for first class meeting on October 14

Oil Painters (recommended medium for class)

• 1 pre-stretched canvas between 9” to 24”
• Oil Paint (Recommended brands: Gamblin 1980 is a great student grade option. For inexpensive paint buy Utrecht brand or Blick brands. Students will likely need a large tube of white, small tubes are okay for other colors, about 37ml)
  • Burnt sienna
  • Ultramarine
  • Titanium white
• Mediums
  • 1 bottle of Gamsol
  • 1 bottle of Liquin (fast drying), Galkyd (fast drying), or linseed Oil (slow drying)
• 2 jars (glass) with lid to contain mineral spirits/ mediums
• Brushes
  • Oil painting brushes, bristle (don’t get plastic/nylon) long handle, combination of flat, round and filbert. You should purchase 5-10 different brushes in a range of sizes.
  • Gesso Brush 1.5” – 3” good for priming.
• Rags and/or paper towels
• Tools
  • 1-2 palette knives
  • 1 Pad of Disposable Palette Paper (12”x16” or larger preferred)

 

Acrylic Painters

• 1 pre-stretched canvas between 9” to 24”
• Acrylic Paint (Recommended brands: Liquitex, Golden)
  • Burnt sienna
  • Ultramarine
  • Titanium white
• 2 jars (glass) with lid to contain water and clean brushes
• Brushes
  • Acrylic painting brushes, bristle (don’t get plastic/nylon) long handle, combination of flat, round and filbert. You should purchase 5-10 different brushes in a range of sizes.
  • Gesso Brush 1.5” – 3” good for priming.
• Rags and/or paper towels
• Tools
  • 1-2 palette knives
  • 1 Pad of Disposable Palette Paper (12”x16” or larger preferred)
