In this course we delve into the vibrant world of wire sculpture, focusing mainly on figurative art. Sculpting with wire is not only engaging and challenging, but also a powerful medium for personal expression. The possibilities are limitless, and by using the human body as our subject, we can explore what it means to be human. We will cover human anatomy and proportion, gesture and movement, balance and expression. We will use sketchbooks to draw and design in, and we’ll learn about other figurative artists who work in wire like Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder, Elizabeth Catlett, Karen Akhikyan, Barbara Lich, and Ruth Asawa.

Techniques Learned
Bending: Bending is the foundational technique in wire sculpting, allowing you to shape the wire into various forms.
Looping: Looping introduces depth and texture to your sculpture, enhancing its visual appeal.
Coiling: Coiling involves wrapping wire around itself or another object, creating intricate designs and patterns.
Cutting: Making clean cuts is crucial for achieving a polished finish in your work.

Some wire will be provided for the first class meeting. Resources for additional materials will be covered at that time.
