Words, images, color, shadow, and line — drawings with thread on fabric are made up of the same components as drawings on paper. This workshop explores embroidery as a form of drawing through direct drawing, transfer, and projection. Using found, vintage, or new cloth, lessons include a variety of stitches, from beginner to advanced; applique; how to choose colors and materials; traditional drawing techniques such as contour and hatching and how they translate into stitch; the historical context of needlework and contemporary embroidery practices to make unique and diverse works of art; and how to advance conceptual development. Class discussions will focus on concept and content development and considerations of textile as medium.
This course is part of MassArt New England summer workshops, where participants immerse themselves in full days of studio work with faculty and peers. Housing is available for participants of this program.
