The future of fabrication is now; ubiquitous access to advanced machinery with which to create ideas is here. Many local libraries, makerspaces and colleges give the public the ability to use computer-controlled machinery for any pursuit. Some of the most available are laser cutting machines which utilize high intensity lasers to cut a variety of material. This class provides the fundamental tools and knowledge to safely and proficiently design and fabricate with laser cutting machinery. From vector design for accurate cutting of forms and shapes, to developing raster files to etch imagery into various materials, we cover a broad array of design techniques for creative use. Students learn about the multitude of possibilities that the laser can offer; etching wood for printmaking, cutting wood for object making, working with acrylic plastics to create translucent works and even working in cloth and leather for fashion design. The ease of accessibility to the process and programs needed to work with lasers, and the myriad materials and processes available, make these skills particularly valuable to makers today; letting them work in many media quickly and efficiently, realizing ideas in ways never before possible!
