Color Theory

Color transforms surfaces, defines form, and evokes emotion, making it a powerful tool in art and design. This course invites students to delve into the mechanics and symbolism of color, from the basics of mixing and value scales to advanced studies in color relationships, temperature, and transparency. Through projects like the “Cube of Transparencies” and optical mixing exercises inspired by Anni and Josef Albers, students explore how color context can alter perception and create depth. In the final weeks of this 7-week course, students develop a custom color palette and produce poetic compositions that reflect personal and cultural associations with color, referencing influential artists like Amanda Williams, Agnes Martin, and Yayoi Kusama to guide their creative exploration. Most exercises will be completed in acrylic paint. All levels of experience are welcome.
