What hot-button issue isn’t to be found in the oeuvre of Andy Warhol -sex & celebrity, money and civil rights marches, camp & kitsch, race & violence? Yes, drugs, too -but our emphasis will be on material culture and visual and artifactual evidence. Embracing the totality of Warhol’s art and self-invention, this course seeks to identify his paradoxes, empathize with his multi-disciplinarity, and contextualize his work as a magazine publisher, filmmaker, and music producer. The self-identified “business artist” lives on as a foundation, the largest single-artist museum in North America, and yet remains an enigmatic household point of reference.
This online class uses the Moodle platform. Students will follow a syllabus that includes the lectures, assignments, and deadlines.
The instructions and login credentials for accessing MassArt technology services will be sent to registered students.
