Art produced by African Americans are cornerstones of the North American art canon.   From African cultural retentions evident in the few material remnants of enslaved 19th-century Africans in the United States to the modernisms and postmodernisms of the 21st Century, this course investigates the lives and art of notable African American artists who have documented the evolution of African American life and identity in the visual arts.
