Sculptural Basketry and Fiber Construction

This online course features the following types of interaction:

  • Live meetings
  • Live critiques

In this workshop, you will learn various basketry construction techniques including coiling, twining, plaiting, netting, and interlacing. You’ll also learn how to create your own cordage from recycled materials. We’ll study historic basketry traditions, and also look at the way contemporary artists are using fiber construction techniques today. Using materials found and foraged, we’ll explore potential for complex and evocative sculptural forms that you can create from anywhere!


  • Fiber rush:  Any color, Just make sure to get 2 sizes-  4/32” AND 3/32”

  • Waxed Linen 

(also available at, JoAnn’s, craft stores)

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
    • Yarn (assorted colors/ sizes)
  • Long Pine Needles:



  • Wire/ wire cutters
  • Raffia
  • Found and foraged natural materials (we’ll discuss options in class)
  • Found objects/ materials, embroidery thread, rope, yarn, fabric, recycled plastic bags, netted vegetable bags, buttons, notions… 
  • Flat or round basketry reed
