This online course features the following types of interaction:

  • Live meetings
  • Live critiques

Good drawing skills and painting go hand-in-hand. This sequential course begins by covering basic drawing principles with an eye towards creating successful underdrawings and compositions. Using still life as subject matter, we will then explore aspects of the indirect painting method based on Flemish painting techniques. Discussions, examples, and demos will cover the following topics: Underdrawing, value, color mixing, applying paint to canvas, grisaille, imprimatura, umber underpainting, and basic glazing techniques.

This course will be taught online using the following format (subject to change as needed):

  • Zoom teleconferencing for intro and discussion of each day’s project
  • PowerPoint slide shows converted to PDF’s 
  • PowerPoint slide shows and demos converted to YouTube videos
  • Availability during class hours via email or Zoom for questions and feedback
  • Zoom teleconferencing at the end of each day for feedback

Students will be required to:

  • Have adequate workspace at home or elsewhere with easel or tabletop easel
  • Create small still life set-ups or work from photographs
  • Have adequate internet access for teleconferencing and email 
  • Take photographs of work to submit via email
