Wire is an incredibly versatile material for sculpture; it can be used to create linear works, or wrapped and woven into patterns to create textural objects and vessels. One can create elegant organic forms with delicate skins of paper or bend precise angles to make a moving mechanical object. Though the processes are completely different, it has much in common with drawing. One can gesture with wire, coil or bend lines into mass, make something float within a frame, or gather lines and branch them out. One can also incorporate objects, such as small pieces of wood or beads, or buttons, into the works.

In this intensive, week-long workshop participants will be exposed to artists from around the world who are using wire and wire w/paper in many different ways. We will begin with wrapping and joining wire to create a 3 dimensional structure that stands, and then explore the possibilities of covering some areas with translucent paper. Assignments will be available, but students are also free to pursue their own ideas and interests. Students will be encouraged to work both figuratively and abstractly to explore the possibilities of mixing line, mass, texture, color, and translucence.
