CDIL2X9 Black and White IllustrationCOURSE DESCRIPTION This class introduces methods and materials for creating striking black and white illustrations. These include ink with brush, pen, and eye-dropper; stipple with technical pen, acrylic and gouache painting, pencil and white Prismacolor on toned Canson, block prints, and scratchboard. Weekly tutorials of new media and techniques are followed by participatory critiques of homework assignments on the technique taught the previous week. The class explores the work of successful contemporary artists, and guest lecturers show their work and offer advice for successful careers in the illustration world. Prerequisite: basic drawing skills. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Mark Reusch (Mister Reusch) is an award-winning illustrator and 1995 MassArt BFA graduate. He’s created hundreds of illustrations for the Boston Phoenix, as well as for clients including Harmonix, Burton Snowboards, Stride Rite, the Boston Globe, and many more. His work has been featured in the recent books Art of Modern Rock, SWAG 2, Blower, and upcoming books about burlesque posters and rock art. CDIL306 Illustrating Children’s BooksCOURSE DESCRIPTION Explore imagery in children’s book art from concept to character development, drawing to design, and media application to finished execution. The class surveys the genres and mediums in the market today and develop drawing and design skills to interpret and communicate words and ideas through imagery, pacing, and text interpretation. Assignments include illustrating children’s poems, picture books, and folk tales. Students work in a wide range of media from gouache and acrylic to colored pencil and collage. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Michele Noiset earned her degree in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has been working as a freelance illustrator for over twenty-five years. Her clients have included national book publishers, magazines and ad agencies. She also licenses her artwork on products and has had successful ornament and greeting card lines. CDIL202 Painting for IllustratorsCOURSE DESCRIPTION This course is for students interested in developing their painting skills for illustration. Using acrylics, which are fast drying and flexible as a medium, students will focus on developing observational skills and their own approach to painting. Working from observation (using objects and photographs), we will concentrate on how to create convincing imagery and develop visual narrative. All levels are welcome. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Carol O’Malia has a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Painting from UMass Dartmouth. She worked commercially as an illustrator, and currently shows her fine art paintings in galleries nationwide. Her work is in numerous corporate and private collections. CDIL212 Art of the Comic BookCOURSE DESCRIPTION This course covers many successful methods for developing a series of drawings and words into comic book form. Participants compose several short comic strips that explore different narrative techniques, and learn how to format comic book panels to create a variety of moods, emotional rhythms, and passages of time. Comic book pages, newspaper funnies, sections of graphic novels, and other forms of "sequential art" serve as a guide. Students are presented with the basic drawing tools for cartooning, as well as important secrets for creating a successful page layout. Personal expression within the medium is the overall focus of the course. Basic drawing and writing skills are helpful.
