AETE308 Visual Arts and Literacy Integration for TeachersCOURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces diverse forms of visual art curricula that enhance the development of literacy for children in K-8 environments. In these curricula, visual arts, visual literacy, and verbal literacy are equal partners in developing meaning and expression for young people. Topics as: bookmaking for literacy development; observational drawing and writing; "painting with words" (i.e., poetry in many forms, text and image integration); and "picture my world" (in which literacy and photographic images are used as models for classroom practice and curriculum development). Through participatory activities, projects, and ideas from current educational research, participants integrate both visual and verbal forms of literacy across disciplines. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Annie Silverman is a relief printmaker and book artist who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, most recently in Denmark, Cuba, Florida, and Iowa. She is involved in creating print installations, such as "Vanishing Pollinators," which was exhibited at Brickbottom Artists Gallery in the spring of 2007. She holds degrees from Clark University, MassArt, and Tufts University. AETE309 Teaching Artists’ PortfolioCOURSE DESCRIPTION Designed for art educators and teaching artists who desire a like-minded community engaged in art making, students in this course search for ongoing connections between creating and teaching. Classroom goals and teaching styles in direct relation to how artists experience making, viewing, and learning are considered. This course further supports teachers in using their own art making, personal sources of inspiration, and reactions to works of art, in teaching. Students work in self-selected media in an interdisciplinary environment. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Chandra Dieppa Ortiz received her BA from Florida State University, a Post-Baccalaureate degree in Painting from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and an MSAE from MassArt. Students investigate current issues in education and analyze implications on the study of the arts. AETE572 Issues in Contemporary ArtCOURSE DESCRIPTION This class is an intensive, condensed examination of different media, traditional and new, and how they are taught in the classroom. Emphasis is also placed on discovering relationships between and among media, content, image and idea. The course includes looking at the substance and organization of lessons; what is appropriate for particular learners; and the creation of efficient classroom routines. Each student will be required to conduct in-depth exploration/research of one concept/process. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR John Giordano is a visual artist and Assistant Professor of Art Education at MassArt. He works with students in the Master of Science in Art Education program on the development of their studio work leading to the thesis exhibition. John also teaches undergraduate interdisciplinary portfolio, museum and community education courses, and co-directs MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships. Before moving to Boston in 2001, he exhibited his work and taught at various colleges in the Philadelphia area, including the ICA, Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Tyler School of Art and Drexel University. In Boston, John has done several art and healing projects with local healthcare partners, as well as numerous school and museum partnership projects including The Boston Public Library, Mission Hill School and New Boston Pilot Middle School.
