2DPA100 Introduction to Painting (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE (and 1 Sat, tba) COURSE DESCRIPTION Begin painting in this exploration of new and traditional directions and techniques. The basis of the course is studio work, primarily working in oil and includes use of models, as well as lectures and demonstrations. Color and composition theory, and the study of form, space, and light are addressed. Previous experience with drawing is helpful. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Christopher Chippendale is an observational painter who has been teaching and exhibiting in New England for twenty years. He has also written critical essays on art and curated and juried numerous exhibitions. His awards include a St. Botolph Club Foundation grant and Blanche E. Colman Foundation award. He is an associate professor at MassArt and is represented by Soprafina Gallery. 2DPA221 Renaissance Painting Techniques (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE (and 1 Sat, tba) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a study of the process of making luminous paintings in the style of the Flemish masters (Hugo van der Goes, the Van Eycks, Dirk Bouts). The first half is devoted to exercises for understanding stages of the technique: underpainting on a gesso ground, methods of applying layers of egg tempera, and oil resin glazes. Thereafter, students apply Renaissance techniques to their own subjects. No prerequisites. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR David Small is a painter who holds a BFA from UMass Amherst and an MFA from MassArt. His work has been shown nationally and internationally. 2DPA303 Painting: The Power of Observation (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE (and 1 Sat, tba) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides straightforward ways to develop painters’ powers of observation by reducing the visible to its simplest terms. The fundamentals (shape, value, angle and color) will be central throughout the semester. The first five or six weeks will focus on still-life setups; the remaining time will be spent painting the model. One painting per week outside of class is required. Oil paint is the suggested medium. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Catherine Kehoe’s work is represented by the Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston. Kehoe studied in the Yale Norfolk program and holds a BFA in painting from MassArt and an MFA in painting from Boston University. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner grant, two Blanche Colman awards, a Berkshire Taconic ART grant, a St. Botolph Club Foundation grant and a Golden Foundation grant. Participants consider content, composition/format, color, surface, materials, and craft while exploring aspects of painting that interest them the most (e.g., experimentation with materials, conceptual and technical approaches, observational work). Individual attention and group discussions of student work and contemporary and historical painting practices enhance studio work. Assignments are tailored for those who want more structure or direction. Prerequisite: Introduction to Painting or equivalent. Students will become familiar with both traditional and non-traditional materials, including water-based paints, plaster, found objects, encaustics, and recycled goods. Class discussions, demonstrations, and critiques complement studio time, and assignments aide each student’s individualized approach and direction. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jacqueline Sylvia is a mixed media artist who holds two BA degrees from Rhode Island College and an MFA from MassArt. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, alternative spaces, and site-specific locations in Boston, Providence, New York, and Philadelphia. Jackie is a two time recipient of the Cirino Fellowship Award. She works in her Jamaica Plain studio. 2DPA390 Painting in an Expanded Field (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE (and 1 Sat, tba) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for students who have prior art-making experience and an interest in using art as a platform for discourse. We will treat painting as an expansive practice that is flexible enough to accommodate both traditional approaches and peripatetic interdisciplinary approaches. Students are encouraged to propose, develop and present several ambitious projects whose formal and conceptual approaches reflect their interests. Individual critiques, class discussions and independent research will complement studio work . Prerequisite: Some previous exposure to Art History, as well as an interest in contemporary art and culture. Previous painting or other art making experience is helpful. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Ted MIneo is an artist living in New York. His work has been shown widely in the US and internationally, at venues like Deitch Projects, the Chelsea Art Museum, Galerie Loevenbruck in Paris, and the Art Production Fund’s APF LAB. NC864 Introduction to MosaicsCOURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an in-depth experience with mosaic design, fabrication, and mounting practices. Each participant will create a mosaic with traditional Mexican glass smalti. Students will design, fabricate and grout a 9" X 12" mosaic. They will gain experience with the unique design potential of this medium and learn more about its rich history. Students should bring photos, books, and sketches as inspiration for their mosaic designs. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Lisa Houck has been working as an artist in the Boston area for over 30 years. She works in a number of media, including etching, watercolor, handmade paper, oil on wood, and mosaic. She has recently created a 22’ long mosaic mural for a new park in Boston, the Frieda Garcia Park. Houck holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University. Her work is in numerous corporate and private collections including Children’s Hospital, Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
