2DPM214 The Art of the Book: Volume IICOURSE DESCRIPTION This intermediate to advanced follow up to "The Art of the Book" continues introducing participants to historical book structures using traditional materials while simultaneously encouraging everyone to put a personal, contemporary spin on their projects. Through weekly demonstrations and ample hands-on, guided studio time, we’ll explore and experiment with more complex structures and off-beat materials. Emphasis will be on refining craft and integrating one’s own voice into the work. Aside from our weekly work in class, everyone will undertake a semester-long project of their own which we will take time to critique regularly as it progresses. Presentations of contemporary artists’ books, simple, low-tech printmaking techniques and means of generating text and imagery will supplement our studio work as time allows. There is no pre-requisite for this course, but participants should have basic bookbinding skills in hand. Everything covered can be easily and inexpensively continued and elaborated upon in your own studio. NC428 The Cutting EdgeCOURSE DESCRIPTION Paper cutting is an ancient but little-known medium for the creation of images, books, structures and prints. It provides many artistic possibilities, giving volume to flat surfaces and exploiting the aesthetics of positive and negative space. Students will go well beyond the basics of this art to explore stenciling and hard edges versus the soft rendering of torn paper, and learn new techniques for creating and reproducing art. Photos, drawings and newspaper clippings are the starting point for projects. The positive and negative space of silhouettes will be used to create icons and structures, and colored papers used to study composition and assemblage. Stenciling and making pochoirs will open the door to multi-stencil prints on a variety of surfaces. This workshop also explores the deep historical and multicultural roots of paper cutting and encourages each participant to pursue his or her own artistic goals. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Beatrice Coron is an internationally recognized paper cutter based in New York City. She uses the cut-out approach in her artist books and sculptures. Her work can be found in major collections in the USA and Europe such as the Metropolitan Museum and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Her work was included in "Slash: Paper Under The Knife," a 2010 exhibition of contemporary paper artists at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. She was a consultant for this show as well.
