SFDN1X1 Drawing for the First Time (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE includes a review day to be arranged. COURSE DESCRIPTION Ease into art making in this enjoyable, non-intimidating first drawing course. Projects help students learn concepts and express themselves as they develop skills and confidence. Students discuss what they see, evaluate drawings, and develop the ability to see in non-stereotypical ways. Short exercises, long poses using a life model, still life, and landscape enable students to learn about line, value, form in space, and composition. This course includes an independent portfolio project and a portfolio review day to be arranged. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Trintje Jansen, associate professor of art education, has exhibited her porcelain relief paintings nationally and in Canada. Work has been shown at the Chase Gallery in Boston and Field Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard and she exhibits annually in South Coast Artists’ Open Studios. SFDN160X Drawing Fundamentals (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE and 1 Sat tba COURSE DESCRIPTION This in-depth workshop introduces and builds upon fundamental drawing concepts that apply across disciplines. Line, value, shape, form, space, intent, and other elements are addressed using direct observation, figure studies, and invented and conceptual imagery. The class refers to contemporary and historic practice from many sources and traditions. This course does not transfer directly as an equivalent for BFA requirement SFDN 181 Drawing I. Students accepted into the MassArt BFA program may request a course portfolio review if they are seeking transfer credit for a required course. Prerequisite: Drawing for the First Time or basic college level drawing course. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Janet Monafo has received numerous grants for painting. Exhibitions include the Allan Stone Gallery and Sherry French Galleries, NY (solo); the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, NY; the National Academy of Design, NY; the Fuller Museum; and the DeCordova Museum. Public collectors of her work include the Allan Stone Gallery, Arkansas Art Center, and the Delaware Art Museum. SFDN1X7 Drawing with Color (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE and 1 Sat tba COURSE DESCRIPTION Learn the fundamental skills of basic drawing, as you develop your understanding and control of color. Using pastel, paint and pencil, students draw from the model and still life, strengthening observational skills and building a successful composition. This is a fun, interactive, but serious exploration into drawing and color. This course does not transfer directly as an equivalent for Studio Foundation BFA requirement SFDN 185 Drawing II. Students accepted into the MassArt BFA program may request a course portfolio review if they are seeking transfer credit for a required course. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals or basic college level drawing course equivalent. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Christopher Sullivan holds a BFA from MassArt and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He studied painting and art history in Tuscany, Italy. SFDN161X Form in Space (See special schedule)SPECIAL SCHEDULE and 1 Sat tba COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to issues central to thought and practice in three-dimensional art and design. Understanding form and space relationships is essential to sculptors, architects, industrial designers, and 2D artists and designers. Students explore scale, volume, mass, and space and creatively investigate form and position in space using a range of materials and building techniques. Use this course to build a portfolio.
