MPSM214 Introduction to Kinetic ArtCOURSE DESCRIPTION Interested in learning about kinetic art and practical techniques for making art that incorporates motion? This course covers hands on, simple, step-by-step, processes to make art that moves through the integration of motors. Students are introduced to the basics of mechanisms: circular motion through direct connections to motors, as well as levers, cams, and pulleys. Projects include how to correctly power a motor, how to add a power switch, how to switch the direction of a motor, and how to change the speed of a motor. Orientation sessions will familiarize students with the fundamentals of wood and metal fabrication techniques. Discussions on kinetic art history as well as a discourse on how it fits into the modern context will be held to inform your artistic pursuits. The goal of the course is to not only provide a basic technical framework, but also a conceptual grounding for students to create artwork that is supported by a contemporary critical structure. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Bob Kephart began creating sculpture using motors and electronics during his undergraduate studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, AB Canada. His artwork during this period was rough, loud, and cynical - much like the sculpture of Jean Tinguely. He later received a MFA in the Art and Technology Department from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While in Chicago, his sculpture matured and grew in complexity while adhering to the formal and conceptual qualities of his earlier works. Bob moved to Massachusetts in 2003 and currently lives in Cambridge where he has a studio. He works at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design as a Staff Assistant for the Technology Department.
