COURSE DESCRIPTION
Learn basic weaving techniques using traditional and nontraditional materials to apply to sculpture, architecture, fashion design, basketry, and more. We cover basic techniques (twining, coiling, plaiting, and random weave) and ways to connect smaller components in order to build larger structures. Treating surfaces (dyeing, embellishment, over-weaves, and painting) is also explored. Hands-on work is complemented with slide lectures and discussions examining the history, cultural adaptations, and significance of weaves in different cultures, and how contemporary artists are integrating weaves into works across disciplines.
